For the first time in its 72-year history, an Estonian film was in the running for the Golden Globe for the best foreign language film. Although Russia's "Leviathan" took home the said award, the nomination alone is a benchmark for Estonian film industry.

An Estonian-Georgian cooperation, "Tangerines" is set in a small Estonian village in Abkhazia during the 1992 Abkhazia war. The film was written and directed by Zaza Urushadze and produced by Urushadze and Ivo Felt of Allfilm. It stars prominent Estonian actors Lambit Ulfsak and Elmo Nüganen, alongside Misha Meskhi and Giorgi Nakashidze.

The surprise winner of the Golden Globe for best foreign film was Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Leviathan", in front of the favorite "Ida" by Paweł Pawlikowski.

"We are happy to be here and to be among the top five films. Truth be told, we didn't come here to win, I've tried to make this as clear as possible," said Ivo Felt shortly after the awards gala. "I hope that no one in Estonia is too disappointed. It would've been naive to think that we can win here."

"Tangerines" has also been chosen as the Estonian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards. Felt and the rest of the crew remain realistic in their hopes for a nomination. "The chances are slim, but they are there," he said.
