Jüri Arrak’s Haunting Vision of a Folk Hero Reissued
The ancient Estonian folk tale about the giant hero Tõll the Great (Suur Tõll) will be published again after 20 years, this time with a new interpretation of the story and the print quality doing justice to Jüri Arrak’s haunting illustrations.
This autumn, Publishing House Varrak will publish the story of Tõll the Great (Suur Tõll) again, this time with a story of the fabled hero of the island of Saaremaa, written by Andrus Kivirähk, kultuur.err.ee reported.
Arrak had to paint three pictures again for this edition, since the old images had disappeared in the passing years.
Kivirähk said the workload was not great, as the folk tale of the legendary hero is quite short. He will take Arrak’s illustrations as the starting point for his writing.
In 1980, Arrak’s artistic vision of the folk tale was made into an animated film by Rein Raamat, with music composed by Lepo Sumera.
