Arvo Pärt Appointed University Lecturer
Renowned, classical composer Arvo Pärt is to begin teaching at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Philosophy this fall.
Pärt has been appointed to the university's liberal arts professor position for a single academic year.
In conjunction with Pärt's arrival, the university is to begin hosting monthly seminars titled "Word and Music," a statement from the university said.
According to the university, the liberal arts professor position was created to develop spirituality and creativity among the student body, faculty and staff.
Other famous Estonians who have been appointed to the position include Hando Runnel, Jüri Arrak, Jaan Kross, Elmo Nüganen, Vello Salo, Sirje Helme, as well as the composers Veljo Tormis and Helena Tulve.
In the past, Pärt has been given the degree honoris causa by ten different universities.
