Estonian photographer Martin Mark's picture of night time Estonian sky is today's Astronomy Picture of the Day, NASA's daily picture competition.

Mark's photo, titled "The Flare and the Galaxy" looks as if a person, standing on the backdrop of the Milky Way, is throwing a lightning bolt. Despite appearances, this person is actually pointing in the direction of a bright Iridium flare, a momentary reflection of sunlight off of a communications satellite in orbit around the Earth.

Iridium flares are predictable and one occurred over southern Estonia last week. Mark managed to capture the flare, which only lasts a few seconds, in a well-planned image.
