The 2016 edition of Eesti Laul kicks off this Saturday with the first semi-final. The fourth act to perform will be Indrek Ventmann with his summer song 'Hispaania Tüdruk.'

Singer Indrek Ventmann's performance in Eesti Laul is the next big challenge in his life after local musical performances in Evita and Grease.

"It's a big honor to be here. All the people here are friendly and it's a good show," he said.

And it is friends that Ventmann is surrounding himself with on stage.

Joining Ventmann on the stage are two people he met while performing in Grease: guitarist and songwriter Allan Kasuk and backing vocalist Kaia Oidekivi.

"They and the band members are all people I feel very comfortable with," he explained.

Ventmann is far tanner than any Estonian is expected to be in February, but for the Estonian who currently resides on the island of Tenerife this matches the theme of his entry.

The song, called 'Hispaania Tüdruk' (Spanish Girl), tells of a boy from Haanja in the South-East of Estonia who longs for a Spanish girl he met while on holiday on the Island of Tenerife.

The song was written by Kasuk specifically for Ventmann to enter into Eesti Laul with.

"We were together in Tererife and Allan got the inspiration from the beautiful landscapes and people there," Ventmann said.

There has been a small fuss in Estonia over the lyrics, which mention that Spain is "over the ocean" from Estonia.

Ventmann responded to these claims by pointing out that while mainland Spain wasn't across the ocean, the Canary Islands were.

"For us, the song has always been geographically correct," he said.

Initially Ventmann struggled to name which song among the other competing entries he would consider a favourite, stating that "all the participants are really good." However, he finally decided that Jüri Pootsmann's 'Play' was his favourite.

While the love interest Ventmann sings to in his song may be fictional, there is an element of truth to the story as Ventmann recently got engaged on the Island.

His love story ends, however, with an Estonian girl rather than the Spanish one he sings of.

Indrek Ventmann will perform in the first semi-final on Saturday 13 February.
