Tanja Wins Eesti Laul
At the grand finale of Eesti Laul, Estonia selected Tanja on Saturday night to represent the nation at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest.
The winner was selected in two rounds at the Nokia Concert Hall. Tanja and the Super Hot Cosmos Blues Band were voted by the public and a professional jury as the top two. A second vote, this time by only the public, named Tanja the winner.
ERR News' Eesti Laul correspondent Stuart Garlick said from the scene that pop has won the day at Eesti Laul, as was generally the case since the competition's inception in 2009. This year, Tanja, with the high tempo "Amazing", beat strong indie folk and blues rock competition to win. Tanja took 53 percent of a 57,000-strong vote.
Tanja, as she had done in the semifinal, put her lifelong training as a dancer into practice, with an acrobatic display in bare feet in the company of a male dancer. The song, Amazing, seemed to inhabit the same space 2012 Eurovision winner Lorreen, of Sweden, with the song "Euphoria." But Garlick said the performance asked a great deal of the singer, who answered all questions brilliantly, singing live in masterful fashion in spite of throwing herself into some almost impossible positions.
Super Hot Cosmos Blues Band looked like stars and walked like stars, Garlick said, performing "Maybe-Maybe", a song that sounded a bit like the English rock band Kasabian doing Depeche Mode, Garlick said. It topped the poll of expert judges, but were ultimately pipped by Tanja in the final.
Tanja was asked how she would celebrate her win: "I don't know yet. It's an amazing feeling. One guy asked me what I was going to do, and I said I'd pop the champagne."
As for her chances in Denmark, she said, "I have no idea. We're gonna do our best. We'll see what we need to maybe change a little bit, or maybe not - but it's the ultimate thing a person can do."
Tonight's lineup was:
1) Laule täis taevakaar – Brigita Murutar
2) Für Elise – Traffic
3) Search – Norman Salumäe
4) Resignal – Wilhelm
5) Supernoova – Lenna

Fun fact: the last time the Eurovision Song Contest was held in Copenhagen, Tanel Padar and Dave Benton won the competition with the song “Everybody”.
