6th 'Estonian Idol' season begins
Estonia's main venue for uncovering talent, the “Estonia is Searching for a Superstar” competition aired its first show over the weekend, its sixth season since 2007. The show is the Estonian equivalent of the Idol franchise.
The final of the fifth, and so far last season, took place on December 23 2012, when Rasmus Rändvee won.
Mihkel Raud, the most cynical of the judges, will not appear this year. Jarek Kasar, better known as Chalice and Tanel Padar will join Maarja-Liis Ilus and Rein Rannap on the judges' bench.
The host is Karl-Erik Taukar, who shot to fame in a previous season of the competition.
Eesti Laul, the nation's other song contest, which will name Estonia's Eurovision entry on February 21 has strong ties to the Superstaar competition.
Two of the last three Estonian Eurovision singers won the Estonian idol competition and of the ten finalists this year, Luisa Värk (second in 2007), Elina Born (second in 2012), Robin Juhkental (competed in 2009), and the due of Triin Niitoja and Jaanus Saago (both took part and made the top 5) have all participated in the Superstaar competition.
