One of the more extraordinary nominees for the Father of the Year title, awarded in Estonia on Sunday to mark the Father's Day, was Alex, a male cat currently housed in the animal shelter in Saaremaa island.

A little while ago, the workers of the local animal shelter received a phone call about a litter of kittens, who were living in appalling conditions in Muratse port. When they went to collect the kittens, they were surprised to find that the little kitties were actually looked after by an adult, male cat.

"The kittens are the mirror images of their father, he was the one to keep them warm, they were huddled up around him," said Edit Annusver, who is now looking after them in the shelter.

As the shelter workers had never witnessed a male cat behave in such a caring manner before, the Estonian Society for the Protection of Animals decided to honor Alex with the Father of the Year award.

"This was a real surprise for us, we couldn't believe our eyes, so we thought it would be cool to nominate him for the award," Annusver told Estonian commercial television channel TV3.
