A show compiled and aired on Russian television on the deceased Estonian singer Jaak Joala was watched by millions of people in Russia, where he remained popular after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The hour-long show was part of a regular program called “Live With Boris Korchevnikov,” on state-owned channel Russya 1, which draws up to 60 million viewers. The stats for the Joala special have not been revealed, Eesti Ekspress reported Wednesday. TV crews and staff were scrambled to Estonia a few days after the death of Joala to gather interviews and material in Estonia.

The show focused on the life and career of Joala, with clips and interviews from ERR and other sources. A number of other Estonians famous in Russia, were flown in to Moscow for the show, which aired live less a week after Joala's death on September 25.

Entitled “The Lonely Estonian: From Whom Was Jaak Joala Hiding From?” and can be watched here, although only in Russian.

In the 1980s, he was dubbed the "Kremlin's Nightingale" for his extensive recording and touring in Russia and the fact that much of his repertoire was Russian in that period. He then turned back to domestic audiences in the re-independence period.

Joala was considered one of the "Three Tenors of Estonia," the others being Tõnis Mägi and Ivo Linna.
