The on-demand, subscription-based film and television program streaming service Netflix, which is currently available to viewers in 41 countries across the globe, is expanding to Estonia soon.

Netflix's imminent arrival in Estonia is an open secret, technology portal Geenius reported.

"All our international partners take it as a matter of fact that Netflix has decided to expand to Estonia, among other countries, in the first quarter of 2016,” an insider in the Estonian telecommunications world told the portal.

The US company is reportedly buying up licenses in Estonia, although ERR chief Margus Allikmaa said the public broadcaster has not yet been approached.

Netflix started its subscription-based service in 1999 and today has around 70 million subscribers worldwide. In Europe, it offers films and TV shows to subscribers via Internet streaming.

The company has expanded its business a lot over the past year, entering new markets in Australia and New Zealand, Asia, and southern Europe. It has also announced plans to launch in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan in early 2016, as well as in other countries in southeast Asia soon after.
