A EU-funded project led by the Film Archive has finished the task of digitizing around 700 hours and 2,100 films.

A major consideration for the digitization of the 35 mm films dating from the 1920s to 2004 was to lessen risks related to preservation, but also to expand online availability.

Most of the newsreels made in Estonia over the years by Estonia Film, Eesti Kultuurfilm and Tallinnfilm are now viewable online. In the near future, the digitized collection will be complemented by documentaries as well as footage from smaller and less-known production companies.

The website established as part of the project can be found at http://www.filmi.arhiiv.ee.
