Data Protection Withholds Approval for Tallinn's New Fare Cards
Tallinn's data system for public transport has hit a snag after it was implemented: the Data Protection Inspectorate has found problems with the electronic fare card database.
The Data Protection Inspectorate refused to approve the data set for the Tallinn public transport system because, it said, it is not clear how personal data security will be guaranteed, Postimees reported.
"Especially considering the wide range of users: Tallinn city departments, the IT service providers, resale points, ticket inspectors, etc," said Maris Juha.
Juha said it was not clear who could access the data and that in its current state it could be used for illegal surveillance activity.
It also took issue with the fact that the new fare card system was introduced on September 21 but the approval request was submitted on November 19.
The Inspectorate has warned that the Tallinn Transport Department must resolve security problems in its data set or face denial of access to the Population Register.
Paper ticketing will end from the New Year and the electronic card will be the basic medium for validating e-tickets on public transport.
