Deadly Week for Cyclists on Roads
Besides drownings and traffic deaths, the summer season has started with an unusually high number of cyclist deaths, raising the year's tally from one to five in just a week.
On May 28, a 47-year-old bicyclist was killed on the Tallinn-Tartu road.
In Ida-Viru County, a 53-year-old bicyclist was killed on June 2. Another man of about 50 was killed near Kohtla-Järve in the same county on June 6 in what appeared to be a chain reaction accident.
In the city of Tartu, an elderly man riding a bicycle was killed when he rode in the path of a bus on June 5. One person was injured on the city bus.
None of the bicyclists were wearing helmets.
From June 1 to 5, Tallinn celebrated its annual Bicycle Week, promoting, among other things, traffic safety.
