Neighbors Concerned over Tallinn Airport's Expansion Plans
Local residents are worried about the environmental impact of Tallinn Airport's plans to expand its runway and other infrastructure east and southward.
At a public meeting last week, the residential community's main concern was water quality, and the potential drying up and flooding of local water wells - a possible side effect of the airport's expansion, ETV reported.
A local farm owner, Jaanus Tõnisson, said the project must ensure that the water that is directed elsewhere is clean and does not contaminate new areas. "The area is already polluted enough, and I think it needs some kind of filters," he said.
The extent of the airport's expansion is still contingent on the amount of matching funds that can be received from the European Cohesion Fund. The environmental impact assessment is being carried out by Ramboll Estonia.
