Labor Inspectorate Finds Violations at Building Sites
The Labor Inspectorate carried out raids at 65 building sites across Estonia on Thursday, revealing 176 safety violations.
In 27 instances, workers were ordered to suspend work or discontinue use of tools.
In half of the suspensions, workers were not using required safety equipment. A third of the suspensions were related to neglected safety measures regarding the danger of falling from high locations, a press release from the agency said.
Construction has the highest number of work-related accidents of any sector, and accidents often go unreported, according to the Labor Inspectorate.
In the last 12 years, 3,617 accidents and 53 deaths have been recorded in Estonia in the construction sector.
So far this year, 95 accidents have been reported and three deaths have occurred in construction. Statistics Estonia estimates that there are five times as many actual accidents in the sector as reported.
