“Taxify and Uber law” reading in Riigikogu met with show of support, black ribbons
The new rideshare bill, which has been designed to legalize and regulate ridesharing services such as Taxify and Uber in Estonia, will have its first reading in the Riigikogu today. The occasion is being marked with very different responses from both sides of the divide.
Two demonstrations were scheduled to take place in front of the Riigikogu on Toompea Hill in Tallinn today, reported ERR’s television news.
At 9:30, businesses in the sharing economy organized a demonstration in support of the sharing economy. Uber, Taxify, and an additional eight other related businesses are also planning on establishing a joint sharing economy association today.
Taxi drivers are scheduled to convene before the Riigikogu at noon today to protest against the new rideshare bill, however.
The Estonian Assocation of Taxi Drivers Union found that the new bill would threaten the normal operation of Estonia’s entire current taxi sector, as well as the economic securities of taxi drivers’ families.
Taxi drivers have begun to attach black ribbons of mourning to their cars as a sign of protest.
