Citing a regulation of the European Commission, the Estonian Agricultural Board (PMA) has banned the sale of 14 herbicide products based on glyphosate that contain polyethoxylated (POE) tallow amine as a co-formulant.

"Fourteen plant protection products containing said co-formulant have been registered in Estonia," PMA Department of Plant Protection and Fertilizers Director Maris Raudsepp said on Friday.

The commercial names of the 14 products listed in Estonia are Agro-Glyfo 360, Amega 360 SL, Klinik 360 SL, Barclay Barbarian 360, Dominator, Glyphomax, Glyfos Supreme, Glyphogan 360 SL, Master Gly 36T, Rodeo, Roundup FL 540, Rosate 36, Shyfo and Symbol.

It is illegal as of Aug. 22 to bring these products into Estonia. In accordance with EU rules, these products may be sold for another six months and used for an additional 12 months following that date.

POE-tallow amine is a surfactant that enhances the activity of herbicides such as glyphosate. Surfactants in herbicide products improve the wettability of the hydrophobic surface of plants to ensure maximum coverage and help the herbicide penetrate through the surface of the plant.

In Oct. 2015, the European Food Safety Authority communicated to the Commission its statement on the toxicological assessment of POE-tallow amine, which concluded that, compared to glyphosate, a significant toxicity of POE-tallow amine was observed on all endpoints investigated. Additional concerns were highlighted regarding the potential of POE-tallow amine to negatively affect human health.
