Air Baltic wants to become biggest airline serving Tallinn
Latvia’s flag carrier, Air Baltic, has set for itself the goal to become the biggest airline at Tallinn airport. The company has also abandoned its plan to buy Russian planes.
“By ordering the [Bombardier] C Series, the decision not to buy the [Sukhoi] Superjet became clear, and with that the topic is finished,” Air Baltic’s CEO, Martin Gauss, told BNS.
Gauss could not say when the Bombardier CS300 planes will start flying to Tallinn, as at present Air Baltic has only one plane of that type.
All 20 CS300 planes ordered by Air Baltic should be active in the company’s fleet by 2019. “If we order more, it will of course take more time,” Gauss said. According to Gauss, they are talking about ordering two more planes of the type. Future developments will also depend on who will become Air Baltic’s strategic partner.
The airline’s older Boeing 737-300 and 737-500 planes will be sold or returned to the company they were leased from, depending on the contract, Gauss said.
Air Baltic is currently the second biggest carrier at Tallinn airport, but wants to become the biggest. “We will also grow in Tallinn, that is our goal,” Gauss said. Talking about Air Baltic’s strategy concerning Tallinn, Gauss said that the company was planning to continue with the present plan of offering connections to European capitals. New destinations might also be added.
