The cooperative Ühistu Eesti Lihatööstus, which has bought the Vastse-Kuuste meat processing plant from Atria Eesti AS, is planning to have the plant going again in the fall and to gradually hire up to 100 workers.

According to Urmas Laht, chairman of the supervisory board of Ühistu Eesti Lihatööstus, the deal took six months to seal. “The price was suitable for both sides, otherwise the transaction would not have taken place," Laht said at a press conference on Wednesday.

While the parties involved agreed not to disclose the exact sum, he indicated that the price was below 10 million euros.

Laht said that the plant situated at Vastse-Kuuste in Southeastern Estonia is in a very good state of repair, and that a minor updates of the premises had already been carried out.

The plant will be put into operation and additional employees will be hired step by step. If the buyers manage to carry out their plans for the plant, they may end up providing jobs for up to 100 people.

“We’ve got the first brand samples ready,” added Laht, saying that a brand presentation was slated to be held in the fall.

The company, which will come on the market with premium products, has set its sights first and foremost on the Estonian market. Interest has been shown by Latvia and Sweden too, noted Laht.

The meat-processing cooperative is currently made up of 10 members that grow a total of 125,000 pigs per year on their farms. Laht said that there were no plans to introduce additional members to the cooperative for at least the next two years.
