Number of tourists in January grows (1)
In January 2016 178,000 tourists stayed in Estonian hotels and other accommodation establishments, which is 6% more than in January of the previous year. The number of both domestic and international tourists increased.
Hotels reported 98,000 tourists from abroad, which is an increase in overnight stays of 2%. The number of tourists from Finland increased by 2%, the number of Russian tourists stayed the same and didn’t decrease for the first time in 18 months.
The number of tourists from Latvia increased by 20%, the number of tourists from other European countries as well as the USA increased as well. Three quarters of all tourists stayed in Tallinn.
Hotels and other accommodation establishments also reported 80,000 domestic tourists, which is 7% more compared to the same month a year ago. 62% of them were on holiday, 23% said they were travelling on business.
The numbers were raised by 877 hotels and other accommodation, which offered 18,000 rooms and 41,000 beds. A third of rooms and 26% of all beds were occupied. The average price of an overnight stay was €35, which is €1 more expensive than in January 2015.
January is an important month for Estonian tourism. Retail’s busiest month of the year attracts a lot of tourists from Finland, and traditionally a lot of Russian tourists come over for their New Year holidays.
