Estonian firm Nordic Aviation Group (NAG) is currently working on developing the new name and face of the country's new national airline, which it plans to unveil before the end of the month. The country’s new national airline is to be named “Nordica”.

According to NAG’s communication manager Liis Veersalu, a comprehensive new brand is being developed around the new name, ERR’s radio news reported.

The goal was to choose a name that was neutral and conducive to international business opportunities. According to NAG board member and future Nordica director Erik Sakkov, the decision process was lengthy—a total of 456 people submitted ideas to the contest, and 20 different names were taken into more serious consideration. Many of the submissions received involved the words “Estonia” or “Estonian”, however the airline wished to avoid any direct relation to the now-defunct Estonian Air.

“In the end it was Nordica which did not meet any opposition and which everybody liked immediately,” Sakkov reported. “We would like to thank everyone for getting involved and contributing, which we really appreciate. Unfortunately, nobody who submitted ideas had come up with the name ‘Nordica’; that honor remains ours.”

With its new name, the airline is striving to underline its Nordic roots, Sakkov explained. He admitted that other businesses already exist with the name Nordica, but stated that what will set Estonia’s Nordica apart is its modern and original design.

The planned new airplane livery will remain true to its home country with a blue, black, and white theme.
