The State Forest Management Centre (RMK) is making 25 positions redundant this summer. In addition, 11 staff are retiring and won’t be replaced, which together makes it possible to save €1.04m.

Daily Eesti Päevaleht (link in Estonian) reported that half of the positions RMK is eliminating affected specialists, the other half jobs in everyday forest management. The changes wouldn’t affect woodmen, RMK said.

According CEO Aigar Kallas, the reason for the layoffs are the rising expectations towards RMK in terms of its development plan. The state expected higher turnover, higher profits, and higher dividends paid every year, Kallas said.

RMK is planning to allocate the amount saved by this step to extend its activity across all areas, which include forest management, timber production and sale, and tourism.
