Ventilation failure kills 171 pigs on South Estonian farm
A forced ventilation failure caused by a power outage resulted in the death of 171 pigs on a farm in South Estonia this week.
According to spokespeople for the Veterinary and Food Board (VFB), they were informed on Tuesday that 171 fattening pigs had died on a farm in Tartu County.
There were altogether 2,500 pigs on the farm.
Anneli Kask, manager of the Veterinary Centre of Tartu County, said that the death of the animals may have been caused by a power failure. “It halted forced ventilation, as a result of which the pigs died,” she explained.
An employee speaking on condition of anonymity likewise told BNS that the deaths were the result of a power failure on a pig farm in Alatskivi Parish owned by agricultural firm Friendsland OÜ. Erika Ilisson, manager of Friendsland, did not wish to comment.
The carcasses will be disposed of at Väike-Maarja Animal Waste Processing Plant.
An inquiry has also been opened regarding the incident.
