Ports of the Estonian state-owned Port of Tallinn handled 1.4 million tons of cargo in October, 776,000 tons less than a year prior, while passenger flows increased by 19,000 to 805,244 people.

Last month's freight flows were affected most by a 800,000-ton decrease in liquid cargo, while changes in other types of cargo were smaller. The handling of containers and rolling stock grew by 17 and 8 percent, respectively. The volume of containers measured in TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) increased by 11 percent, the Port of Tallinn reported.

The January-October freight turnover was, at 17.1 millions tons, 11 percent smaller year-over-year. The decrease was due to the decline in liquid cargo, whereas the amounts of bulk goods and rolling stock increased.

Last month's passenger totals hit a new record for October and represented a year-over-year increase of 2.3 percent. As usual, the Tallinn-Helsinki route had the most passengers, 709,527 in all, who accounted for 88 percent of the total number of passengers. Passengers traveling between Tallinn and Stockholm numbered 75,768, accounting for 9 percent of the total, and passengers on the Tallinn-St. Petersburg route accounted for two percent of the total, with 12,157 passengers in all. Cruise ship passengers made up one percent of all passengers passing through the Estonian ports in October.

Listed Estonian shipper Tallink carried 62 percent, Viking Line 19 percent, Eckerö Line 16 percent and St. Peterline two percent of these passengers.

In the first ten months of this year, the Port of Tallinn served a total of 8.7 million passengers, 4 percent more than during the same period last year.

Passenger ships called on the ports 451 and freight ships a total of 153 times in October; the corresponding figures for the ten-month period ranging from January to October were 4,721 and 1,491, respectively.
