Industry body: Amid IT enthusiasm, Estonia must not forget dairy sector
While a great deal of attention is being paid in Estonia to modern technology-related fields, the dairy sector, which continues to have the potential to make a contribution to the country's economic growth, must not be allowed to fall into oblivion, said Jaanus Murakas, deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the Estonian Chamber of Agriculture and Trade.
"It is now believed that startups and very modern IT technologies are the miracle cure for the economy, while we have neglected traditional fields," Murakas said at the Dairy Forum taking place in Tallinn on Friday.
Murakas said that the dairy sector is a field which still possesses more potental to make a contribution to the country's economy and support regional development as well as rural employment.
He also noted that a fragmented, small-volume dairy sector has no future.
"The dairy business is a big-volume business and today we are indeed in a situation in which we are searching for better solutions to arrive at more competitive milk prices, so that the next crisis would not hit us so hard," said the deputy chairman. "Our resilience to crises is not very good. There's a lot to learn from it."
Murakas added that this would definitely mean further developments within the sector.
