Number of domestic and international tourists in March 13% higher
In March 212,400 tourists stayed in Estonia, which is 13% more than in March the previous year. The number of both domestic and foreign tourists increased.
Around 120,900 foreign tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments, which is a 14% increase compared to March 2015. Of foreign tourists, 71% arrived from neighboring Finland, Russia, and Latvia. Compared to March of the previous year, the number of tourists arriving from Latvia, Finland and Russia increased by 48%, 19% and 4% respectively. The number of tourists arriving from other European and also Asian countries increased, Statistics Estonia reported.
Of foreign tourists, 75% preferred to stay in accommodation establishments in Tallinn, while 8% stayed in Pärnu and 4% in Tartu. In addition, 4% of foreign tourists stayed in Ida-Viru County.
Of domestic tourists, 91,500 stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments, which is 11% more than in March 2015. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists also increased by 11%, meaning that the duration of their stay remained at last year's level. 57% were on holiday, and 25% travelled on business.
29% of domestic tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Harju County, 19% in Pärnu County, 12% in Ida-Viru County, and 9% in Tartu County. Compared to March 2015, there was an increase in the number of domestic tourists staying in the Harju, Pärnu and East-Viru counties.
In Tartu County, the number of accommodated domestic tourists decreased by 2%, while there was a 14% increase in the number of foreign tourists.
In March, 895 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. About 18,000 rooms and 40,000 beds were available, 39% of the available rooms and 31% of the available beds were occupied.
The average cost of a guest night was €33, or as much as in March last year. The average cost of a guest night was €36 in Harju County, €31 in Tartu County, and €27 in Pärnu County.
