St. Ola rental contract ends as Hiiumaa ferry line awaits arrival of Leiger
As of Thursday, the ferry St. Ola is no longer serving the Rohuküla-Heltermaa route connecting Hiiumaa to the Estonian mainland as the rental contract with Saaremaa Shipping Company was not extended.
Ferry line operator TS Laevad, a subsidiary of the Estonian state-owned Port of Tallinn, did not apply to extend the rental contract, as according to them, the owner of the ferry, Saaremaa Shipping Company, has its own plans for St. Ola.
Saaremaa Shipping Company did not comment further on its future plans for the ferry.
In the meantime, the Regula will remain the primary ferry to serve the island of Hiiumaa, with the Harilaid and Kõrgelaid providing supplementary service for the route until the newly-built Leiger arrives on the line.
The Leiger is currently on its way from Sefine Shipyard in Turkey to Estonia; the exact date of its entering into service on the Rohuküla-Heltermaa route has yet to be determined.
