State-owned Estonian postal and logistics company Eesti Post, operating under the Omniva brand, is about to establish a new logistics center in Jüri, just south of the capital of Tallinn, by 2018 for an investment of 10 million euros.

The purchase and sale agreement concerning a plot of land situated near the Tallinn Ring Road was signed on Oct. 4 and a design and construction tender is to be announced soon, the company said on Tuesday. Operations are slated to move to the new location in 2018, after which the logistics center located on Pallasti Street in Tallinn will be closed.

Ansi Arumeel, a board member at Eesti Post, said that the Pallasti Street property will be put up for sale soon with the condition that it must be possible for Eesti Post to continue to use it until the new logistics center is completed.

Arumeel said that the company considered more than 30 plots of land in and around the capital city as potential locations. "Speaking in favor of the Pähklimäe Street property were good access for both people and vehicles, parking possibilities, proximity to other important infrastructure such as the airport and main roads, distance from Tallinn' city center as well as opportunities for expansion," he explained.

Mattias Kaiv, spokesman for Omniva, told BNS that the logistics center will primarily handle the logistics of goods arriving at Tallinn Airport from the UK, China and Germany.

The new facility will employ a workforce of at least 300 and will feature a new parcel-sorting line for which a purchase tender is already underway.
