Registered unemployment inches up to 4.2% in October

At the end of October, a total of 26,914 people, or 4.2 percent of the working-age population, were registered as unemployed, a slight increase over last month's figure of 4.1 percent, figures published by the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund (EUIF) show.

The highest level of registered joblessness was once again recorded in Ida-Viru County at ten percent, while Valga County followed at 8.2 percent. Tartu and Harju County represented the lowest levels of registered unemployment at respectively three and 3.1 percent.

Manual workers made up the biggest portion of the registered unemployed who had previously worked, accounting for 21 percent of the total, while service and sales personnel and skilled workers followed in accounting for 18 and 17 percent of the total, respectively. All three ratios remained unchanged since September.

The EUIF received fewer new job offers during the month of October than in September of this year, however 37 percent more than during October 2015; new job offers numbered 4,244, while the total number of jobs available via the fund totaled 9,937.

During last month, 3,533 individuals, including 443 persons with reduced capacity for work, found a job or started a business with the help of the EUIF.

People employed within the framework of the wage subsidy program numbered 1,339, while 4,464 people participated in other active measures.

Recipients of unemployment insurance benefits numbered 10,140, accounting for 33 percent of the country's registered unemployed. The average benefit per calendar month was 433 euros, while the total sum disbursed was approximately 3.7 million euros. The basic unemployment allowance of 137 euros per month was paid out to 6,975 persons, or 22 percent of the total number of registered jobless.
