On Tuesday, Estonia's Harju County government approved thematic plans for the third Estonian-Latvian power connection which concern the county. With that, plans for building the connection have been approved in all counties affected.

"Plans for the most important missing link for separating the Baltic electric system from Russia, the 172-million-euro third Estonian-Latvian power connection, have now been approved in all counties," Taavi Veskimägi, CEO of Estonian TSO Elering, wrote on social media.

"I thank the people living in the region, local municipalities as well as Pärnu, Lääne and Harju County governments for cooperation, but especially for understanding — no one wants a power line outside their house, but it has to run somewhere," said Veskimägi, adding that years of planning and discussion resulted in the best possible compromise between different interests and wishes.

Estonia is to announce two tenders for building the Estonian section of the connection in the fall, and the final construction decision will be made jointly by the two countries next spring.

The total cost of the third Estonian-Latvian power connection is expected to come in at about 172 million euros. In 2014, the EU decided to cofinance the project with 112 million euros.
