Telia wants to bring 5G network to Tallinn in 2018
Mobile network operator Telia wants to launch a 5G data network in Tallinn and Stockholm simultaneously in 2018.
Telia President and CEO Johan Dennelind said in an interview with daily Eesti Päevaleht (link in Estonian) that the data network must be high speed, very stable and with low lag times in the near future.
"We will introduce 5G data very early and show Estonians what it means to live in a gigabit society or even in terabit territory," said Dennelind. "Tallinn will hopefully be terabit territory — and very soon." He noted that the ambition was to provide everyone with data speeds of one gigabit per second.
According to the Swedish CEO, such high data speeds aren’t necessary only for entertainment purposes but also for critical services and e-health as well, and for that, rock-solid network reliability and investments will be needed.
"We are happy to be able to make these investments into Estonia," said Dennelind. "If we show the way in Estonia, we will do so in other countries where Telia operates as well, and thus for the whole sector in our region as well. I want to use Estonia as a model market both for competitors and for other regions."
