A topping-out ceremony was held on Friday for the new ministry building on Central Tallinn's Suur-Ameerika Street which will jointly house four of Estonia's eleven government ministries.

State realty firm Riigi Kinnisvara AS signed a contract with private limited company 2Torni OÜ in November 2014 for the construction of a more modern, energy-efficient and optimally planned office building for the state institutions.

The new joint "superministry" building, which is replacing the old Ministry of Finance building on Suur-Ameerika Street, is the future home of the Ministries of Finance, Social Affairs, Justice, and Economic Affairs and Communications and will allow for the state, in collaboration with the private and public sectors, to save a total of nearly €7 million over ten years.

In moving to the new, energy-efficient building, nearly 20,000 square meters (215,000 square feet) of high energy-consumption office space currently inefficiently used by the ministries will be reduced by approximately 20 percent to 16,000 square meters (170,000 square feet); overall energy consumption is also expected to be reduced by nearly 70 percent to 120 kilowatt-hours per square meter per year.

The new building is scheduled to be completed by summer 2017.
