TS Laevad, the subsidiary of the state-owned Port of Tallinn that is to take over operation of ferry routes between Estonia's mainland and its larger western islands in the fall, has entered into a contract with Saaremaa Shipping Company to buy the ferry Regula as part of a backup plan to guarantee uninterrupted ferry service beginning on October 1.

TS Laevad decided to purchase the Regula because it was an ice-class ship in good shape and it was big and suitable enough to serve as a backup ferry for years to come. The ferry had previously served routes between mainland Estonia and the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.

The Port of Tallinn subsidiary had contacted nearly 30 companies in serach of all ferries currently on the market for sale or rental. According to TS Laevad CEO Kaido Padar, possible offers ranged from 4 to 6.5 million euros in price.

The Regula has a capacity of 400 passengers and up to 80 passenger vehicles. The ferry will be handed over to TS Laevad on October 1.
