The county government of Saaremaa has received a letter by the island’s local businesses association. In the letter, the businesses demand that the schedule of flight connections between Tallinn and Kuressaare be changed so that the first passengers travelling to the capital would make it there by 9:30 a.m.

According to County Governor Kaido Kaasik, in the case of the Tallinn-Kuressaare-Tallinn route the fact needed to be taken into account that its operation was tied to that of the Tallinn-Kärdla-Tallinn route. Whatever was changed for one route would immediately affect operations on the other.

Kaasik added that the Saaremaa and Hiiumaa county governments had been in negotiations about a potential flight schedule change. According to the proposal currently discussed, the first flight from Tallinn to Kärdla would be 6:35-7:05 a.m., and the return flight with a 15-minute turnaround 7:20-7:50 a.m.

This again would mean that the first flight of the day on the Tallinn-Kuressaare route would leave the capital at 8:10 a.m. and make it to the island by 8:50 a.m. Again with a 15-minute turnaround, the plane would then return to Tallinn at 9:05 a.m., arriving there at 9:45 a.m.

Having the first flight to Kärdla leave Tallinn even earlier would be problematic, as making it to the airport using public transport was impossible for passengers at that time of day, Kaasik said. “The other option would be to swap the morning flights and fly to Kuressaare first, but that would also mean that the evening flight to Kuressaare would leave Tallinn earlier,” Kaasik added.
