Airport CEO calls for more frequent flights to London, Northern Europe
There are not enough flights between Tallinn and London currently, and more flights to Northern Europe should be added as well, said Piret Mürk-Dubout, CEO of Tallinn Airport, operator of the capital city's international airport.
"It is important for business travelers to be able to fly to business meetings in major European capitals in the morning and get back home by the evening," Mürk-Dubout told BNS. "What we see here is that the London route, for example, is definitely underserved, because it's the largest hub in terms of both direct and connecting flights."
The CEO noted that efforts were being made toward achieving a more frequent flight schedule to Londn as well finding optimum solutions to meet business travelers' needs. "We are also focusing on Western Germany, from where bigger incoming tourist flows could be expected, and are discussing possibilities for a more frequent flight schedule to Northern Europe," she added.
Mürk-Dubout said that the names of aviation companies with whom talks are currently being held cannot be divulged before they themselves release information on new routes or flight frequencies.
"At the end of the day, it's the airlines themselves who decide the introduction of new routes, and this decision can only be one that makes sense commercially," she remarked.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications has formed a work group to analyze flight frequencies and air connections as well as find ways to expand the route network with the help of public resources, said Mürk-Dubout, adding that it would be a matter of the possibility of increasing state support without ending up in conflict with EU state aid rules.
