Estonian company to export poultry to Hong Kong
HKScan Estonia, Estonia’s largest meat and food processing company, operating under brand names Rakvere and Tallegg, has gained approval to begin exporting chilled and frozen poultry to Hong Kong.
Approval was granted by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. The first products to be exported to Hong Kong will be unprocessed chicken feet and wings.
“Exporting to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region requires a rigorous approval process and very high standards of quality, so this is a prestigious mark of recognition for our products,” said Teet Soorm, General Manager of HKScan Estonia. “We plan to start with chicken feet and wings, but in the future we plan to expand with products of higher value.”
“Hong Kong’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department is very thorough. It took one and a half years to complete the approval process,” Ago Pärtel, Director of the Veterinary and Food Board, added.
In addition to poultry meat, the company has also applied for permission to export pork to Hong Kong. Hong Kong is the first phase in HKScan’s strategy to establish a footprint on the Asian market. The next steps will be to expand to other Asian markets as well.
As part of its strategy for profitable growth, HKScan Group is investing in its export business by establishing a sales office in Hong Kong this year. The target for the future is for the Hong Kong office to also assume responsibility for marketing and customer service in other Far Eastern markets.
HKScan Group, which has been active in Estonia since 1998, owns the whole pork and poultry chain from feed and primary production all the way through to production. The Group's product brands in Estonia are Rakvere and Tallegg.
