Estonian gas transmission system operator Elering Gaas and Finnish state owned company Baltic Connector OY sent out a grant application to European Commission for co-financing the construction of the Estonian-Finnish gas interconnector Balticconnector.

In addition, Elering Gaas applied for a separate grant to enhance the Estonia-Latvia interconnection, enabling gas transport in both directions. Currently, gas can only be pumped from Latvia to Estonia.

"Just few weeks ago it was rather uncertain whether it was possible to fill all preconditions for the grant application, said Chairman of Elering Gaas’ Supervisory Board Taavi Veskimägi. "I can’t overvalue prompt and constructive efforts of all Estonian and Finnish stakeholders in the grant application process."

According to current plan, Balticconnector will be commissioned by 2019.

Balticconnector and reconstructed Estonian-Latvian gas interconnection are vital steps in development of the joint Finnish-Baltic gas market, which should operate in efficient and transparent manner by 2020.
