STK Group, an Estonian company owned by Russian businessmen, has commissioned a environmental impact study in preparation for building an oil refinery near Sillamäe in northeast Estonia.

The results of the study will are expected to be published in two weeks, but Andrei Birov, the marketing manager of the Port of Sillamäe, a partner in the project, told ERR radio today that the project is likely to get the go-ahead as there would not be any ecological impact in the area.

“If the investor is ready to go ahead with the project, we will give the land, infrastructure and building rights,” Birov said.

He said that the initial plan is to produce one million tons of products per year, including diesel boat fuel, petroleum coke, fuel oil and granulated sulfur.

A number of other projects are planned, or are already in the works, in and around Sillamäe such as a new container and transit terminal, which should be ready by the end of the year.
