Gender gap at managerial levels: the news isn't all bad
A recently published global report on women in business and management by the International Labor Organization (ILO) shows that Estonia is in the middle of the pack for female managers.
Estonia ranks 56th for women's percentage share of all managers among 125 countries for whom data was available until 2012. According to the report, as of that year in Estonia, 32.8 percent of all managers and 32.4 percent of senior and middle-level managers were female.
The list is topped by Jamaica (59.3 percent of all managers), Colombia (53.1 percent) and Saint Lucia (52.3 percent). In the rest of the countries, women are less likely to become managers than men. It is noteworthy that Latvia holds 7th position with 45.7 percent, perhaps setting a positive example for Estonia. Of the other close neighbors, Russia is 25th, Lithuania 27th, Sweden 38th, and Finland 58th. See the chart below for other countries.
The largest percentage of women among senior and middle-level managers is in the Dominican Republic (55.8), Panama (48.7) and Latvia (44.6).
Globally, the proportion of women managers is the increase. However, only 5 per cent or less of the CEOs of the world’s largest corporations are women, ILO reports, adding that although today women own and manage over 30 per cent of all businesses, they are more likely to be found in micro and small enterprises.
