Estlink 2 Power Cable Completed
General construction was completed Friday on EstLink 2, the 320-million-euro, 170-kilometer underwater power cable connecting Estonia and Finland. Transmission capacity testing began today.
The first stage of the test period will wrap up at the beginning of December and Estlink 2 should become operational in February, reported uudised.err.ee.
The link will boost power capacity between Estonia and Finland from the 350 megawatts it is currently to 1,000 megawatts, although that capacity will not be fully realized until a reserve station is completed.
"Then we will hand over the link to the market and relieve the bottleneck in power trading between Estonia and Finland that has resulted from a limited connection capacity," said Taavi Veskimägi, the head of Elering, Estonia's grid operator.
