Yesterday, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves took a tour of Enics Estonia, a major electronics exporter and southern Estonia's largest employer.

"If the rest of Estonia's rural areas had companies like this one, our success as a country would be completely guaranteed, and all we need is entrepreneurial people who are ready to get things done," Ilves told ETV.

Based in the small town of Elva (population 5,500), Enics Estonia has 760 employees. In three years, the company has seen its turnover rise from from 60 to 88 million euros. It is aiming for the 100-million mark next year. Major clients include Kone, ABB and Schneider Group.

CEO Emöke Sogenbits said: "Estonia's labor costs have, for a long time now, not been low enough to be an incentive for bringing orders here. More likely, we will be trusted if we can ensure good quality and efficiency, since we produce industrial electronics that are built by people."

"We want to grow on account of efficiency, which means that we need to focus on increasing salaries, not the number of employees we have.“
