Minister Orders Risk Assessment for Muuga Harbor
Minister of Economic Affairs Juhan Parts has tasked the state-owned Port of Tallinn AS with conducting a risk assessment of Muuga Harbor in light of recent expansion at the site.
In a letter to the port authority, Parts said that the increasing number of operators at the country's main cargo harbor requires an analysis to assess the interaction between the companies and their impact on the surrounding environment.
The development and expansion of Muuga Harbor must be planned cautiously, taking into account all risks, the ministry said in March 25 statement. It also noted that the harbor is vital to the proper functioning of other ports and rail services.
According to Parts, in order to ensure the universality and objectivity of the analysis, the port should cooperate with other institutions such as the Technical Surveillance Authority and the Rescue Board.
The ministry has set an April 30 deadline for the preliminary assessment.
