The Ministry of Culture has sent regulators a letter of concern regarding a proposed acquisition between Tallinn's two major movie theaters, fearing the monopolization of the market.

"I am concerned about what would happen if the majority of the cinema market in Tallinn is consolidated in the hands of one owner,“ Minister of Culture Rein Lang said in the letter.

Forum Cinemas announced yesterday that it plans to buy Solaris if the Competition Authority permits it. But the ministry said the transaction could be in conflict with competition rules.

"We are dealing with a complicated merger,“ Märt Ots, who heads the Competition Authority, told uudised.err.ee yesterday.

The agency is looking into the matter, as well as an incident in June in which both theaters simultaneously raised ticket prices, purportedly by coincidence.
