Eesti Energia's First CHP Plant Construction Imminent
Eesti Energia has laid the cornerstone for the first heat and power generating unit outside Estonia - a biofuel-operated co-generation plant in the border town of Valka, Latvia.
Also the power company's first foray into mini-CHP generation, the plant will be built with financial assistance from the European Union. The total investment cost is about 10 million euros, with 36 percent coming from the structural funds, from aid earmarked for renewable energy projects.
The electricity generation capacity of the Valka CHP will be 2 megawatts and the thermal output will be 8 megawatts. The CHP plant will start supplying the town of Valka with heat while power will be sold to Latvia.
The Dutch construction firm Imtech Industry International will build the plant.
