Estonians traveled more than ever in 2014
People residing in Estonia made 3.9 million trips abroad last year, up by 5 percent compared to 2013, but the trips were on average shorter, the Bank of Estonia said.
Three-quarters of all foreign trips were made to EU counties, and one in four to Finland. Latvia was the second most popular destination with half a million (13 percent) visits, followed by Russia (10 percent) and Sweden (7 percent).
Nearly a third of all trips were day trips, while single-day trips increased. In the multiple-day-visit category, the average trip lasted 4.6 days, slightly less than in 2013.
The number of people visiting Estonia also increased, but by only 1 percent to 6.2 million. Trips from EU nations made up 71 percent of the pie. Finns topped the charts as usual, making up 39 percent of the traffic. Russians (18 percent), Latvians (9 percent) and Germans (6 percent) followed.
The number of Russian tourists, a hot topic in the current climate, fell by 11 percent in the last quarter as the ruble plummeted. But on the whole, 3 percent more Russian tourists traveled to Estonia last year, compared to 2013.
The average length of a multiple-day trip for all nationalities was 4.5 days, which is 8 percent longer than in 2013.
