Lithuania Hoping for a Solution to Rail Baltic Standstill by July
After a meeting of deputy secretary generals, the Lithuanian delegate said they regard Vilnius as part of the Rail Baltic high-speed rail project and the problem if or when to connect Vilnius to the proposed route should be solved by July.
The initial project of the rail link featured Kaunas, not Vilnius, but a change of government in Lithuania brought a demand that Vilnius should also be connected.
Latvian and Estonian counterparts said they understand Lithuania's wish, but adding Vilnius to the first stage would cost time and funds, adding that the capital should be joined at a later date after viability studies.
A joint company to oversee the project would have to be set up before the fall, in time for the latest round of EU fund distribution.
