Finnish Strike Disrupts Regional Air Travel
A strike by Finnish aviation mechanics which began Monday morning has caused the disruption of inbound and outbound flights at the Helsingi-Vantaa airport, a major hub for air travel to and from Estonia.
Flights to several destinations have been canceled, though so far the Tallinn-Helsinki route remains unaffected. The strike could potentially disrupt flights operated by Finncomm, Finnair and Blue1, rus.err.ee reported.
As of 15:00 on Monday the Finnair website listed 11 flights scheduled for the day as canceled, and a futher 16 cancelations on Tuesday. Delays have also been reported.
A statement released by Finnair said that though most of their flights canceled so far had been domestic, some flights to Stockholm, Geneva, Budapest and Stuttgart were also shut down. The statement said that futher flights may be canceled with short notice, and urged passengers to check the airline's website for the latest information.
Mari-Liis Rüütsalu, head of communication for the Estonian travel agency Estravel, recommended that travellers planning to transit through Helsinki keep up with the latest information on canceled flights, and if necessary, contact their travel agencies to make alternative plans.
