Economic Affairs Minister Juhan Parts has put a date on when Estonians will finally be able to travel to continental Europe by train - 2023.

With improvements in domestic train travel grabbing the headlines this week, the Rail Baltic project is also proceeding.

The only question mark is Lithuania's participation in creating a joint enterprise, ETV reported.

"We've reached the point where we have to launch the joint enterprise and in other words also actually invest," said Parts. "So that Rail Baltic would have a business owner and I hope this will be resolved in the coming weeks and months."

Yesterday, the first Stadler electric train started its journey from Tallinn's central station. It is one of 18 electric trains and 20 diesel trains from the Swiss concern that will ply all of the domestic lines next year with Elektriraudtee livery.

The electric trains are ready to go into service, and the diesels will be introduced early next year.
