Tallinn Approves Long-Term Plan to Develop Paljassaare Peninsula
The administration of the capital's Põhja-Tallinn district on Tuesday evening approved a long-term plan to develop the Paljassaare peninsula, including residential areas, to support up to 5,000 new inhabitants.
The city's vision is to turn the run-down industrial area into a residential and business center over the next few decades.
But the municipal opposition has already cast doubt on the specifics, saying that the approved plan does not address many problems that could arise from adding the equivalent of a mid-sized Estonian town to Tallinn, uudised.err.ee reported on Tuesday.
IRL's Yoko Alender said that issues such as public transport links with the city center and kindergartens should be better tackled.
Other critics have pointed to a lack of public debate on the subject, while Märt Sults, the deputy head of the district's administrative council, said that the changes are likely to make the area more upscale and unaffordable to young families.
The Paljassaare peninsula lies just north of the Kopli district, which itself is set to see major development as the city is selling a 17-hectare area with plans for 38 apartment houses.
