More domestic and foreign tourists in February

183,000 domestic and foreign tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments in February, which is 4% more than in the same month last year, Statistics Estonia reported on Friday.

An increase was registered in the number of both domestic and foreign tourists.

Accommodated foreign tourists numbered 96,000, which marks an increase of 4% over February 2015 as well. The number of nights spent by foreign tourists remained at the previous year's level. 72% of foreign tourists arrived from neighboring countries Finland, Russia, and Latvia.

The number of Finnish tourists increased by 3% in annual comparison, the number of Russian tourists remained at the same level as last year for the second month in a row, and the number of tourists from Latvia increased by 17%.

Some 77% of foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in Tallinn, 7% stayed in Pärnu, and 5% in Tartu.

February also saw 87,000 domestic tourists, which is 4% more than the year before. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists grew by 5%, i.e. the average duration of a stay was a little longer than a year earlier. Of domestic tourists, 23% travelled on business.

Of the domestic tourists who made use of accommodation establishments, 28% stayed in Harju County including Tallinn, 17% in Pärnu County, 11% in East-Viru County, and 9% in Tartu County.

Accommodation establishments of Harju, Pärnu and Tartu County received more domestic tourists than in February 2015. In East-Viru County the number of accommodated domestic tourists declined by 4% while the number of foreign tourists increased by 8%.

In February 874 accommodation establishments had 18,000 rooms and 41,000 beds available to tourists. The room occupancy rate was 35%, the bed occupancy rate 28%. The average cost of a guest night was €32.
